The Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistor (MOSFET) is the workhorse of modern electronics. Unlike bipolar junction transistors, MOSFETs are voltage-controlled devices requiring virtually no gate current, making them incredibly efficient switches. They come in two flavors: N-channel (conducts when gate voltage is high) and P-channel (conducts when gate voltage is low). MOSFETs excel in power applications because of their low on-resistance and fast switching speeds. You’ll find them controlling motors, switching power supplies, and even inside every microprocessor. Key specs to watch: gate threshold voltage (VGS), drain-source on-resistance (RDS(on)), and maximum drain current. Choose wisely and these three-terminal marvels will switch kiloamps without breaking a sweat.
